I'm Not Sold Just Yet ....

Ok first off, yes he's doing it again. secondly, does this man have balls of steel? absolute respect and gratitude for his fans?, or is this the beginning of the new age of music marketing. i guess we will all just have to watch this inter-web space and pray the cards fall in the favour for both music buyer, listener, lover, and artist.

What am i talking about? well a while back, Trent Reznor, lead singer of the rock band Nine Inch Nails took a tour down under, and realised that his record company were selling his album at almost 40% more than the average album lying next to it on the shelf. he quipped to crowds while on tour at his epiphany on why music sucks these days and why American Idol actually influences teens tastes. its simple he said, "who's gonna go buy music for triple the price"? the scary thing was, upon contacting his record label, the response was ... "Well we price your record higher in the market, because we know your fans are willing to pay that much for your music".

Moving on and releasing his album Year Zero, he suddenly found himself without any record contract and felt the need to use this power to start distributing his music in a different way. a new way, explored by Radiohead and others before him. a way that would link him to his fans without the need for a middleman, gobbling up 90% in the dollar. his decision was to explore the internet fully fledged as a distribution, promotion and creative tool. months later he did what many thought was crazy, settling on releasing his new album, Ghosts I - IV, digitally via the web.

For free, the user got the first nine tracks of Ghosts in high-quality MP3 files as well as a 40-page PDF book covering the whole release. For five bucks, you got all 36 tracks in a variety of digital formats plus the PDF and digital extras. Ten dollars got you all that plus two CDs in a six panel digipak package with a 16 page booklet ..... I mean what ever way you look at it, its a win win.

Well NIN went all out this time around, a mere months later, the new album, "The Slip" is now available for absolutely nothing. mentioning on the site "Thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years - this one's on me". sure many have said Reznor is only able to do this now because of the success and wealth already gained from years in the business, but does that not make it any less of a good move for both fan and musician? i say as long as the end user has the power back in their hands to aid in a fair trade or purchase of such goods, then lets explore this further. sure the artist is due a royalty if the art is worthwhile to the end user, but the days of coporate suits and record company middlemen sapping the profits from selling music at record high prices is well and truly at an end. this is what the internet is all about. taking back the power one day at a time.

Monsters Are Real ....

An agency that just keeps inspiring me on the basis of their classic work, and direct execution is that of Invisible Creature. i think ive mentioned them before, but if not heres a small recap. Invisible Creature is a graphic studio based in Seattle run by brothers Don and Ryan Clark. as well as being wizards of art direction, they also belong to a rock band by the name of Demon Hunter .... too cool.

cutting to the chase, these guys work alot around the music and entertainment industry, having created a huge amount of album artwork and promotion for the worlds leading bands and artists. seen the latest Foo Fighters record cover? yup they did it, along with countless others.

having worked with richard last year to visually conceptualise an idea for an album cover for the band Box, i recently came across a feature on Invisible Creature's work for the band Bleeding Through's album, "The Truth". it brought back alot of memories, fusing themes and issues relative to the music and band, cutting ideas to the core and executing them so simply as to push a powerful lasting message. Great designers, pushing a style i love. clean and straight to the point, no vector rainbows or swirls of bullshit to be found. trends are overrated. dig their work below. buy some of prints. support good artists.

The Pirate Bay Fights Back ...

Im sure most of you are aware now days of BitTorrent, the uber popular and easy to use P2P file transfer system used by almost everyone in the known universe. put simply, BT is the latest and greatest thing to come along in the last 3-5 years of file sharing methods via the internet. basically working on the principals of having many "seeders" helping to give out or upload a file to "leachers" who partake to download the particular file or files in question.

This largely works on the principal of fair trade, where by no single user is ever the sole giver or taker of one such digital file(s). which also works perfectly in theory as any downloader can be downloading multiple parts of the file, at once, from many users.

Alot of the time this method is perfect for large file downloads, and of course if you know anything about BT, you know the best site to find lists of all the music and movies you want is The Pirate Bay (.) org. well ok, technically this site argues that alone it does nothing wrong, it is simply a gateway / storage tank for marking BT files. it doesnt host any illegal content on its own servers, its users however are the ones that hold the illegal / legal data being transfered at all times.

Since its inception this , and other sites have been targeted heavily along with others by the MIAA, RIAA, MPAA and every other acronym organisation under the sun representing big corporate america and its affiliates. basically the big boys dont like the idea of free media out there, and feel that we should all live in 1984, paying for plastic discs and not evolving to the screams of a society searching for a better method of entertainment delivery, storage and consumption, at a fair price to all along the chain. the bottom line is hiding behind the fear mongering tactics of advertising file sharing as totally illegal and leading to crime (have you seen those cinema ads lately? geezzz) these organisations dont want to step up the technological game ..... unless they can maintain the same bottleneck of little content for big cost to the consumer.

The latest news from The Pirate Bay camp is that they are currently in a lockdown dragout trial with Swedish police and the large Hollywood movie studios. now in all circumstances we like to view the law as impartial and a beacon of justice standing between all parties, setting innocence until proven guilty, protecting individual rites and seeking truth. but as long as the law is a human with a badge, the wheels of justice will always be greased by money and power. in the last few days its recently been made aware that the Swedish chief police investigator on this trial, has been an employee of none other than ..... the american movie studio : Warner Brothers. thats a nice way to say, the big boys are lining the cops pockets with cash to force a verdict into their corner, shutting down technology, P2P file sharing, and expanding their markets of over priced goods and services which are no longer suitable to this market. so who are the bad guys now?

6 Degrees Of Maya ....

So time is ticking down and Mexico just feels like its about to hit me full on. It's been way too long since i posted anything so here goes for breakin the drought. Truth be told, lately ive just been so busy with work, my only break is the weekend, and well by that time the last thing i feel like doing is sitting in front of my mac, reading text lol.

But enough of that, time to reorder things and put priorities first. Namely locking down Mexico details and accomodations, and then moving onto more planning. So far so good though, ive done a ton of reading and research, so much so that Craig over at Ink recons im over prepared to travel the Bus network HA!

Anyways, back to the topic ....
I'm searching through flickr, looking for images of Tulum, deciding whether to trek round that way after Tikal, and suddenly (as always with internet researching) you stumble onto something which just leads to so much more. So i spot this image of a bloke reading a National Geographic magazine, and suddenly see that there was a whole feature on the Maya in the August issue 2007.

So off i go in search of this issue and its contents :)
i'll link up some pages below for anyone interesting in a bit of quick reading and great GREAT images regarding the Mayas of Central America. be sure to take the quiz and learn some quirky facts. some include .....

* The Maya put a board on the front and back of a baby’s head and tied them together to flatten the baby’s forehead. The boards were left on for several days or weeks. The ideal was for the forehead and nose to run along the same line in profile.

* The Maya believed the human race had been made out of ground corn and penitential blood. According to the sacred book Popol Vuh, the gods decided to make the human race after attempting to make humans out of mud, wood, and rushes.

Fascinating ancient culture, i guess im just trying to put forward an idea of why im eager to visit this region, its ancient relics, and the surviving culture and natural surrounds. like i've always said, i kinda have a bee in my bonnet where i just feel that time is really shorter than we all feel it to be. I see my opportunity to do these things now, and i'll be damned if anyone is gonna put me in a 2.5 kids, 1/4 acre block lifestyle. Viva Mexico .....

NSW sky to get heritage status

Of all the BS things i've seen lately, this takes the cake for the month. This news story comes in from NSW, a week or two ago during the whole, Earth Hour crock, which basically went unnoticed, or at least made some big wigs feel they were caring for the environment for a second.

"The National Trust of NSW is set to classify both the day and night sky above the state as worthy of preservation."

National Trust NSW president Zeny Edwards said the sky viewed from NSW had extraordinary aesthetic, historic, social and scientific significance for all Australians.

The move was timely with Earth Hour on Saturday, when switching off city lights would allow the sky to be seen clearly, he said. "Our sky is the only vista common to the whole country," Dr Edwards said today. We hope the listing of the sky will be a unifying symbol to help focus awareness on the need to protect our environment in the broadest sense." A clear view of the sky is the right of every Australian and should be preserved."

Yesh .... how bout we stop worrying about who can see what in the sky from where, and start worrying about water, drought, food and waste production, green transportation and a host of other issues which demand our attention now. and to think these idiots get put into these places of office and councils on our behalf, coming up with hair brain ideas like "heritage listing the sky"? and we just sit back and let them fill their pockets. who knows, the air we breath over in the west may be considered inferior soon to our fellow New South Welshman. ... Alec, don't name your kid Zeny, got it!

And so it begins ...
been kinda burnt out on work as of late, hence the no show here and there. but over the last week im hitting the books once again to plan this great escape come July. i heard a great chinese proverb today, you know those two line sayings that, for a second just seem to sum up the universe? or aleast the last 24 hours of your life...

"There is a time to fish, and there is a time to mend your nets....."

yup, i think that just kicks it right there, just meditate on that one for a second. that reminds me, i flicked over to Mike Giants blog the other day and he posted a piece on meditation. and i quote ...

"Concentrate on your breath. Just try it. As you breathe in, say "breathing in" in your mind. As you breathe out, say "breathing out". Really try to feel the air moving in and out of your body. In, out. In, out. As thoughts arise, note them, and try to let them go. For example, if you notice that you're thinking about something that happened in the past, note the thought as "the past" and go back to your breath. As thoughts arise, note them and let them go, and return to the breath. Simple as that.

During your practice, it's important that you don't get judgmental about your thoughts. When you notice that you've been distracted, don't allow your mind to chastise your lack of attention. Sometimes you'll get lost in a thought process for a long time. Don't trip. Just smile, relax, and go back to your breath.

i tried this out recently and it totally smacked me the instant i did it, i mean for an instance i was able to just zone in, hear the other noises floating in the distance, feel the breeze, and it just made me appreciate the day in 10 minutes, maybe 10 seconds, who knows.
so point is, life is screaming past me at 100miles, so i think im just trying to slow it down for a second before i actually hit mexico, belize, guatamala, north america, canada, germany, singapore and perth. more to post soon on the holiday planning. so far the tickets are officially booked. researching lodgings in Tikal and Palenque. Miguel, ..... add Melbourne on there will ya? i expect cold Corona's when i turn up.

It's Not Illegal Immigration, If It Was Always Your's To Begin With ...

I was listening the other day to a show about how open America's borders are and how floods of Mexicans are pouring over the border to seek a better life in the US. in the conversations a key point was brought up that I never even knew about, the fact that California was once actually apart of Mexico, along with Texas and a few other colonies. So after losing land to the United States ... well, technically they're just taking back what was once their backyard, not by force but by simple economics. pity the Mexicans couldn't surf back in those days.

More Than The Smell ....

A snapshot in time. while its on my mind, ive been having these childhood flashbacks lately, no not the clear as day hollywood cut scene types, but just the "hammer over the head" kind that stop you dead in your tracks, and make you think of things you long forgot.

i mean weird stuff. like digging for antlions in the back yard when i was 6. hiding out in tree clippings, acting like a castaway on the tv survivor series. even remembering the army surplus canteen i used to fill with cordial, yeh ... weird stuff. sure theres been more, and all have been triggered by related events nowdays, but why suddenly flashbacks to childhood stuff? mmmm strange indeed. trouble is half of the time it smacks me over the head and then the next day ive forgotten the event, but i can remember .... remembering ... something. haha.

Whale hunting. this is just one of those stories where its blatantly one sided, you know it is, you know it will always be that way, but yet it still tugs at the heart strings. in the past 2 weeks the japanese whaling operations occurring through the Asia Pacific region have drawn attention due to the extravagant protests by a few Greenpeace activists, namely boarding a whaling vessel and chaining themselves to the deck for 3 days.

is it just me or this the same merry-go-round we've been on since ... they banned whaling down in our southern Australian oceans ? we bitch and moan every time the Japanese and Norwegians go out for their annual harvests, but yet i can't help seeing nothing being done about it? not only that, i find it completely hypocritical of us to voice our opinions on what and what shouldn't be killed by .... anyone.

ok ok, these whales are endangered, almost extinct, yada yada, but last time i checked we were still killing our native coat of arms? yeh that furry thing we call a kangaroo. come on, whats the difference between slaughtering millions of head of cattle for prime beef, and hunting whales. both are sought for meat, purely and simply. and both are harvested with the same degree of cruelty, picked out from the environment, head lopped off, bleed and butchered into teeny weeny pieces for hungry humans. more than that, the japanese whaling industry has been rooted in the Japanese culture for over a century, so who are we to intervene like vegan saints all of a sudden when ... with one single glance, our backyard is just bloody as theirs.

i mean just reflect for a second, how would we feel if suddenly the japanese began flying aircraft over our farming communities, with the intention of stopping us from farming cattle, claiming that we were over polluting the region and aiding deforestation. they could make up any reason they wanted, a parallel to the "endangered species" bandwagon. imagine that, yeh ... we'd be pretty pissed off too. funny thing is i do agree that we should stop hunting endangered species, i just don't think we have any right to impose our views on other nations, and continually slander them in every westernised media outlet for it, whilst we commit offences of our own, in the eyes of others.

Jigsaw ...

This year is going to be a strange one, a turn in the road i think. once again ive been static here, yeh ive been busy, normal life routines just eating up the days, but i've found its just so easy to cycle through 24 hours and figure ... well nothing happened so what the hell do i post on.

truth is plenty has happened, i just havent been aware of it or ive been to busy / lazy to actually think about it, let alone snapshot my opinion on it. so lets waffle a bit. first off, how shocking is that banner and colour scheme, i feel so outdated already lol, time to spruce that up again into something new i think, just a little tweek here and there. shame that blogspot doesn't let you alter things down to the css level all that easy.

like ive mentioned before this year im looking to secure work in some form of fulltime design employment. whether that be a balance of freelance or full scale agency work. the funny thing is im working up my lost time at my current location until i take leave in July, so it almost feels like im employed full time anyway. its extremly daunting to think that i need to lose this security blanket to move on. some money vs no money vs a decent salary.

on other news, my closest friend lost his Mum to cancer over the week. a story i won't dwell on, but a mark of respect to be mentioned. we will all miss Bev and her kind hearted nature, Mark you should be proud to have had such a special person in your life. to your Dad, your brothers and you, i wish you all the best, condolences from my family.

moving on, whats this i hear about Heath Ledger being found dead today in his New York apartment? man ... is the world sucking at the moment or what. it just goes to show, behind the mask that we all saw in the public eye of a fun loving aussie, a young vagabond, he might of been on a downward spiral after a marriage breakup and birth of his first child. not to mention he had just wrapped filming on the new Batman film, being cast as the arch villain "The Joker". fitting? or not? it kinda reminds me of Brandon Lee's death after "The Crow". a truly bright spark that decided to burn out now rather than face the world. i can't help feel that he was just getting started? and that his latest role could have been the cornerstone of a new path for him. such a sad loss. for anyone not privy, check out the trailer to The Dark Knight, and witness how well he seems (at this early stage) to channel Alan Moore's vision of the killing joke.

see so i guess a bucket load is happening, i just need to clear the head a bit more. a focus will be on my leave break over July for a trip to the America's. and we are only 23 days in ... of 365, or is that 366, or should we rather follow the Mayan calendar ? a thought to dwell on. with all this going on, the stock market crash of yesterday, billions lost, millions to be made, the scales seem more unbalanced than ever. am i a crazy to continue to see the stupidity in the ever present urge for wealth and needless possessions? this path that everyone follows. buying into invisible promises of security and safety, stocks, bonds, property, health and wealth, cures and dreams. for what? i won't be a part of that puzzle. i hope i wont be apart of that puzzle. i think we all just need to take a moment and realise life is there to live. see you in Arizona Bay.

Two Thousand And Eight ...

Hola. well its been kinda static here of late, but i'm not about to just let it drop. what have i been up to? well to quite literally put it ... nothing involving a computer, or work for a better term. ive tried to just relax and catch up on the things that ive enjoyed and missed out on through the majority of 07.

so reflecting on 2007, big year that it was, i recon it was one of the quickest to go by in a long time? was that just my imagination, or is time just speeding up to that great big stop sign of 2012. lol. who knows, all i can say is that it went by in a flash. i mean, i completed a University Degree, i moved house, etc etc all with less sleep than was humanly acceptable.

so what does 2008 hold. well alot i think, it feels like the chains are almost off and i can really jump ship for the first time if i choose to. and damn thats a scary thought. almost as scary as being static and comfortable. i sometimes don't quite know which would be worse. looking forward things which could happen ....

i'll strive to be employed full time in my industry without much freelance.
freelance could take over if the right doors were opened.
a job opportunity could open for me in Melbourne.
i could just sail off to some other metropolis for work.
a friend could become a father.
i could be enjoying Comic Con in San Diego.
a world trip part 2 is in the works. time and budgets are working against it.

Did Morgan Spurlock find Osama bin Laden?

Rumors are flying that filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, director and film maker of "Super Size Me" and "30 Days" fame may have done what the United States government has failed to do for the last six years ... find Osama bin Laden.

The speculation first began at the Berlin International Film Festival in February, where Spurlock showed a select group of potential buyers 15 minutes of footage from his new documentary, "Where in the World Is Osama bin Laden?" The film follows Spurlock through the Middle East in his search for the elusive leader of al-Qaida. According to Slashfilm.com, The Weinstein Co. quickly snapped up the picture after seeing the clips.

Adding to the belief, Daniel Marracino, the film's director of photography, is quoted in Variety, saying of the movie, "We've definitely got the Holy Grail."

Whether this is just a genius publicity ploy or if Spurlock actually found bin Laden has yet to be revealed, but the answer should come next year, when the documentary is slated to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

Canadians are just wak!

Ok what happens when, after trillions of Olympic Games, people start to run out of ideas for animal mascots? well ... thats when crazy Canadians just say CRYPTO MUNDO ! and decide its time to make Bigfoot and Thunderbirds their official 2010 Winter Olympic Game mascots.

How freakin cool is that! To be exact ... the cryptozoological beasties are Quatchi the Sasquatch, Miga the Sea Bear, and Sumi the Thunderbird. The mythical creatures are the work of Vancouver-based Vicki Wong and Michael Murphy of Meomi Design.

None of the mascots actually exist in real life: Miga the Sea Bear is a combination of an orca and a Kermode bear that her designers say likes surfing and snowboarding, and lives off the coast of Vancouver Island. Her black costume includes a fin coming out of her head.

Sumi, the Paralympic mascot, is a horned-hat-wearing Thunderbird from Whistler that likes alpine skiing.

And Quatchi is the first Sasquatch in history to actually make an appearance before human beings. The young sasquatch, complete with blue earmuffs, likes hockey, photography and travel, and, given his hulking size, dreams of being a goalie.

Blue Tongue ... Green Pockets

Where do you draw the line between corporate sellouts and successful business practices? Bluetongue Brewery, a boutique beer brewer on the east coast of Australia has just been bought out by none other than .... wait for it. Coca Cola, well Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA) to be exact.

For me its a shame, seeing such a brand fade into the giant multinational corporation hands of the world famous Coke ribbon. what keeps these brands successful in my eyes is their independent ethic, and niche practices that get squashed as soon as people try and compete on a larger scale against the Calton United's of the world. i mean you've gotta ask the question .. what’s more important, selling more product for profit? or losing the very character which makes your brand successful. I guess when the men with deep pockets come a knocking for buyouts, not many "do it for the love" anymore .... but then I guess we all saw it coming when they sold a 50% share to the Singleton Group (headed by Advertising and Banking executives) can anyone say ... Buy Sell, Buy Sell.

THE AUSTRALIAN:
COCA-COLA Amatil's push into the alcoholic beverage market has gained momentum with the company's Pacific Beverages joint venture acquiring NSW boutique brewer Bluetongue.

"We have been looking for a local premium beer brand for some time, and we couldn't have found anything more authentically Australian than Bluetongue," CCA chief executive Terry Davis said.

Mr Davis said the capacity of the existing Bluetongue brewery would be expanded by about 50 per cent initially but would ultimately be used to produce smaller-run and speciality beers. The flagship Bluetongue lager would switch to PacBev's new operation, a 50 million litre brewery to be built somewhere on the east coast.

"We just couldn't make enough beer. We could have built a new brewery, but we'd have been up against Lion Nathan, Foster's, a resurgent Coopers and now Coke is building one, so I'd rather let production be someone else's worry," he said.

Another sellout I won't be supporting.

Another Mans Treasure ...

Hola ! to all and welcome back. been on pause for a bit, while i wrapped up the school year and completed my final year exhibition for Curtin University. all in all the year went swimmingly and seemed to just take off in speed towards the end, kinda crazy really. i almost feel as if i've been in a time warp and its now the end of 07. EEK!

anyway, thanks to all those who helped along the way, your assistance and time was hugely appreciated. thanks also to all who came by to view the work and to add their feedback. lastly thanks to the few who were interested in my work and are keen for more, you know how to contact me.

ok so what now i hear? much of the same really till 08. work now takes on a juggling process between consistant part time work and my freelance work. im currently up and running doing a job for "Creative Spaces" in Freo, on a 6 panel outdoor shelter, recognising Aboriginal settlement in the Bibra lakes area. Cheers to James for this. apart from that i just need more sleep as usual :)

last but not least .... while surfing through Flickr (yeh im addicted i'll admit it, now join in) i came across this guy who is a sculpter of raw recycled articles, combining them in new ways to form anything you can imagine, from dogs, robots, cars, and faces. check his work out, wouldnt it be cool to see the things he see's in the everyday ...
